Today, innovation is the primary driver of competitiveness for both companies and nations. The WIPO Global Innovation Index 2026 – an international ranking that measures the innovation capacity of various economies – highlights the critical importance of protecting innovation. Developing a new technology requires years of research and significant investment, whereas copying it can be done much more quickly.
Switzerland has secured the top spot for the 16th consecutive year, followed by Sweden, the United States, South Korea, and Singapore. Next in the rankings are the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Finland, Denmark, and China.
An interesting note: over a five-year period, Huawei filed more than 5,000 patents annually – a feat matched by several other companies.
It should be noted that these rankings are based on a company’s legal headquarters which, for tax reasons, may not necessarily be the same as its production base. European nations have seen their standing slip: Germany ranks 11th, France 13 th, and Italy 27 th placing it just ahead of Spain, which ranks 28 th. Within the European Union, Italy holds the 12th position.
